Connecting existing buildings within an active food-processing facility brings its own set of engineering challenges. This project in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, centred on an existing link structure requiring structural investigation, evaluation of its construction and review of applicable building code requirements. The objective was to establish a clear path for integrating the structure with the surrounding facility while addressing existing conditions and regulatory requirements.
co-elevate's structural engineering team was engaged to assess the existing construction, identify potential deficiencies and develop solutions for the link building. Our scope included structural investigations, evaluation of existing systems, conceptual design options and engineering documentation for building permit approvals. The project highlights the importance of practical problem-solving when working with existing industrial infrastructure, where understanding what's already been built is just as important as designing what comes next.
