PETERBOROUGH LONG-TERM CARE HOME

PETERBOROUGH, ON

Peterborough Long-Term Care Home, located on Trent university land, is a 135,200 sq.ft., 4-storey building that provides 224 new beds for residents requiring long-term care. In addition to private suites, the first floor of the building also houses multipurpose rooms, a Bistro, and training rooms. The building includes lounges and dining area on each floor and balconies facing the courtyard to help create gathering spaces and build community for residents.

The building’s structural system consists of insulated concrete form (ICF) exterior walls, cast-in-place (CIP) concrete interior walls, and hollowcore precast concrete slabs for the floors. Steel Deltabeams and wide flange columns were used to support precast slabs. The use of flush Deltabeams allowed the team to reduce floor to floor heights and improve mechanical coordination while still maintaining fire rating between floors without additional fireproofing. The building sits on conventional pad and strip footings. The front building canopy is made of conventional steel frames, steel columns on conventional concrete piers and concrete footings.

Utilizing ICF for the walls of the structures allows for better insulation and curing of the concrete in harsh winter conditions and allowed for faster and more efficient construction throughout the year. Precast hollowcore slabs are also popular in the construction industry for their time saving, as they are transported to site once cured, and placed where needed, speeding up the construction process.
