The Carpenter's Union Hall addition in London, ON expands the existing facility with 5,160 square feet of new training space and a 2,000 square foot mezzanine, creating a modern environment for hands-on carpenter training. co-elevate provided both civil and structural engineering services for the project, delivering a seamless addition that integrates with the existing building while allowing the facility to remain operational with minimal disruption during construction.
Although the existing structural system was mainly concrete, the structural system for the addition consisted of open web steel joists (OWSJ) with a metal deck for the roof, and an OWSJ with a composite metal deck at the mezzanine level, this was used for time and cost efficiency purposes. As for the footings, conventional concrete footings were utilized generally, and grade beams were needed to span over the existing foundations, simplifying construction while accommodating the existing structure. A suspended training system was engineered within the mezzanine to support the additional loads required for drywall and suspended ceiling installation training, ensuring the space could safely accommodate the facility's specialized educational programs.
On the civil side, our team modified the site infrastructure to support the expansion while maintaining the functionality of the existing property. Services included redirecting existing storm sewers and reconfiguring the parking layout to replace spaces impacted by the addition. By utilizing the site's existing drainage strategy, no additional stormwater management infrastructure was required, resulting in an efficient and practical site design.
